CockroachDB serverless sweepstakes

To celebrate the general availability of CockroachDB serverless, I launched a contest on X (Formerly known as Twitter) where users were asked to repost our announcement tweet and share what they would do with the time they would save.

The winners would receive a pair of CockroachDB branded AirPods (Or as we called them, RoachPods).

We received 27 entries, almost all of the answers being high quality. We got the messaging around the no-hassle experience of CockroachDB out there, made a splash in our product launch, and a few lucky people even won our one-of-a-kind RoachPods. Take a look at some of our other favorite answers below. ⬇️

#ScaleWithForm3

When Formlabs launched the Form 3 Desktop 3D Printer in April 2019, one of the key goals was to drive awareness. To get the world excited, we announced a Form 3 giveaway on launch day. To enter, users were required to:

  • Reshare the featured post with the contest rules and briefly state how they would use the Form 3

  • Use the hashtag #ScaleWithForm3

This contest was run across Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter and received over 700 entries. A winner across all three platforms was chosen at random.

Formlabs x New Balance

Formlabs collaborated with New Balance to create a new 3D printed material for their sneakers. The first shoe released in this series was the TripleCell 990, featuring a heel printed in the custom Rebound Resin. To celebrate this launch, we announced a giveaway on Instagram.

To win $200 in New Balance Credit to spend on a pair of these state of the art shoes, users had to:

  • Follow @formlabs on Instagram

  • Tag a friend in the comments section

Over 1,000 users entered, with a lucky winner being contacted via Instagram to receive their credit. This contest would eventually be run again with the launch of the second shoe in the Formlabs x New Balance series.

#RideWithUbuntu

I designed a social media contest at OpenStack Summit 2016 in Austin ,TX to help drive booth traffic and lead generation for Canonical. In order to win a custom designed Ubuntu bike, booth attendees were required to:

  • Have their badge scanned by our staff

  • Take a selfie with the bike (To prove they were on-site)

  • Use the hashtag #RideWithUbuntu (So we could track contest entrees)

  • Post their photo with the information above on Twitter

A winner was selected at random at the end of the event and now owns a very rare Ubuntu edition custom bike.

Formlabs x Tom’s Guide

In early 2022, we collaborated with Tom’s Guide for both an article and a giveaway. We made the most of our emerging platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram to drive traffic (and entries) into our raffle.

Rubik’s Cube Contest

At Formlabs, I rapidly scaled our TikTok account from zero followers to nearly 15,000 in less than a year. One of our most popular videos was a quick demonstration of an intricate Rubik’s Cube, printed on our Fuse 1 SLS 3D printer. Due to the insane response, we created a contest to follow up with our excited audience and give them a chance to own one for themselves.
